WHERE We grow in faith
At First Presbyterian Church, we are called to serve beyond our walls—making a difference in our community, our nation, and around the world. From supporting local outreach programs in Waterloo to partnering with national relief efforts and global missions, we seek to share Christ’s love through action. Whether it’s feeding the hungry, disaster relief, or international partnerships, we are committed to being the hands and feet of Jesus wherever there is need.
all are welcome!
sunday suppers
Five churches in the Cedar Valley have partnered together to offer a free community meal at our church each Sunday night. This is a great mission opportunity and we always appreciate volunteers. The doors open at 4 p.m. and supper is served at 5 p.m. We typically serve about 100 meals. Volunteers from the community are appreciated. If you would like to volunteer on a Sunday or two, please contact the church office or sign up on the Volunteer Center of the Cedar Valley website.

Reading is for everyone!
little free library
A Little Free Library is located on Walnut Street by the church. The library makes children's books available to our neighbors. This ministry is part of a larger international movement to encourage reading and build community. Please stop by and take a book, enjoy it, return it, or share it with others. Then come back for another. This Library is for everyone!
providing assistance
helping hands
Helping Hands is a fund that provides needy neighbors with assistance for utility bills (gas, water, electric, etc.). Donations come from the free-will offerings of church members and the Presbyterian Women's group. Community agencies screen requests. In a typical year, we help about 150 families with grants of $50.
caring for our neighbors
the walnut neighborhood
First Presbyterian Church is located in the historic Walnut Neighborhood. We participate in the Walnut Neighborhood Association which meets once a month. Most recently, one of our church leaders helped in the design of a new playground being built in the neighborhood.
The events the church is involved with include “Neighborhood Night Out” in August at which we meet and greet one another over a shared meal. In late November or early December, a Chili Supper is held at the Walnut Court Housing Unit. Church members volunteer and provide toys and gifts for “Christmas in Walnut” at the Boys & Girls Club.
supporting our local schools
Partners in Education
First Presbyterian Church is a Partner in Education with
Dr. Walter Cunningham School for Excellence
in Waterloo. The church supports children, teachers, administration, and parents in their mission to educate and improve lives. We show support by providing Cafe Awards, filling celebratory bags for the 100th day of school, offering awards for Star Week, adopting a Family at Christmas, helping with the May Spring Fun Fair, and giving aid in any way we can. At the beginning of the school year we love to collect school supplies to deliver to the school for a fresh start.
continuing education
Florence Warnock Scholarship
Students graduating from a Black Hawk County High School are eligible to apply for the Florence Warnock Scholarship. Applications are available at all guidance offices in Black Hawk County High Schools. This scholarship is $1,500 and renewable for four consecutive years toward a college education at the university of the student's choice.
Creating hope
elders, inc
Many years ago, First Presbyterian Church, along with four other churches in Waterloo, invested money to purchase and maintain a building that provided apartments for the elderly. The building was eventually sold and the money from the sale was invested. The churches formed a board of directors to oversee the fund and to distribute money back to the churches. The board was named Elders, Inc. Each church has two directors on the board.
Ever since COVID, we have received $10,000 annually. The Mission and Outreach Team uses these funds to provide hope, healing, and help to others in the community. Each year, different local non-profits are recipients, as well as First Presbyterian’s Rental Assistance Program.
